This 8 day Indian Music Summer School offers expert tuition in three principal vocal genres of Khyal , Dhrupad and Thumri as well as Abhinaya . It gives opportunities for people to learn directly from the Indian masters, in the sprit of traditional guru-shishya parampara (teacher - pupil relationship). Participants choose the genre in which they wish to specialise, and the relevant artist then becomes their guru for the week. There will also be an opportunity to join a Tal (rhythm) class led by a Pakawaj player as well as a Tabla player.

misra   Pts. Rajan & Sajan Misra Khyal

Pts.Rajan & Sajan Misra are recognised as Indian's finest singers of the North Indian style of khyal , from the esteemed lineage of the Benares Gharana (musical tradition). Literally translated as 'imagination'. Khyal is an elaborate and virtuoso style, demanding improvisational flexibility as well as careful attention to notation, phrasing and rhythm.

uday   Uday Bhawalkar Dhrupad

Uday Bawalkar is a highly respected dhrupad singer hailing from the longstanding Dagar Gharana. Dhrupad is believed to be the oldest surviving form of North Indian classical music, dating back to the 15 th century. It denotes both a form of poetry and a style of music in which the poetry is sung.

Manik is one of India's leading pakhawaj masters who has accompanied all of the major dhrupad artists in concerts all over India ad around the world.

sharma   Sunanda Sharma Thumri

Sunanda Sharma trained with the legendary Girija Devi of the Benarasi Gharana. Often described as a 'light' or ' semi classical style', thumri is nevertheless a demanding ad highly refined genre. Thumri developed in Lucknow during the 19 th century, and is now a popular art form.

gautam   Bireshwar Gautam Abhinaya & Thumri

Bireshwar Gautam is an outstanding performer of this very rare style of combining abhinaya and thumri . These aspects of kathak and thumri - to superb standards of rendition, make Biru a remarkable artist. He will teach the art of 'bhav' and mime when singing thumri.
