Summer School 2006 

 INDIAN MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL
 29 July – 5 August

This 8-day summer school offers courses in the three principal vocal genres of dhrupad, khyal and thumri as well as sitar. It offers the opportunity to learn directly from the Indian masters, spirit of the traditional gurushishya parampara (teacherpupil relationship). Participants choose the genre in which they wish to specialize, and the relevant artist becomes their guru for the week.

khyal
Khyal (lit. ‘fantasy’) is the principal genre of North Indian vocal music, demanding improvisational flexibility as well as careful attention to nuances of intonation, phrasing and rhythm. Rajan and Sajan Misra are among India’s most celebrated exponents of khyal, from the esteemed lineage of the Benares Gharana (musical tradition).

dhrupad
Dhrupad is considered to be the most ancient form of Indian classical music. The word dhrupad is derived from dhruva (fixed, steadfast) and pada (word, composition). Uday Bhawalkar is a highly respected dhrupad singer hailing from the long-standing Dagar Gharana (musical tradition).
munde Manik Munde pakhawaj The pakhawaj is an ancient doubleheaded drum usually used to accompany dhrupad. Manik Munde is one of India’s leading pakhawaj masters.
purbayan Purbayan Chatterjee sitar The sitar is one of the most well-known stringed instruments from the Indian sub-continent. Purbayan Chatterjee is a talented sitarist from the Senia Maihar Gharana (musical tradition) founded by Ustad Allauddin Khan. Purbayan carries the rich legacy of the great sitar maestro Pandit Nikhil Banerjee.

The pakhawaj is an ancient doubleheaded drum usually used to accompany dhrupad. Manik Munde is one of India’s leading pakhawaj masters. Thumri is a light classical genre of Indian classical vocal music. The style developed in Lucknow during the 19th century and is characterized by the subtle expression of emotions inherent in the song-texts. Sunanda Sharma is a disciple of the great Smit, Girija Devi and young star of the Benares Gharana (musical tradition).

Bireshwar is a talented artist who performs a combination of the thumri vocal style and kathak dance. This 3-day course features the relationship between the thumri lyrics and characteristic movements of kathak dance (bhav and abhinaya) and is open to anyone with an interest in singing and dance.
