‘Sounds of Asia 2006’ is AMC’s 9th annual summer school and offers the unique chance to learn directly from great masters of Indian, Chinese and Japanese music at the Royal Academy of Music, London. The summer school will include specialist studies with master musicians, supporting ensemble and rhythm classes, optional yoga and tai chi classes, as well as seminars and concerts, which will be open to the public. The theme for ‘Sounds of Asia 2006’ is ‘Composition’. While it is fascinating to be playing music composed centuries ago we wonder how compositions were created and structured. They were sacred and their subtleties kept secret. They were the launching pad for improvisation. In the 21st Century, what is the inspiration behind compositions? Is it nature? Is it poetry? Is it rhythm? Is it folk music and aspects or people’s daily lives? In Indian music the idea of a composition – BANDISH – is extremely important as it is this concept that ideally embodies the essence of a particular RAGA. It is also a means through which the rhythms of Indian music can be introduced, and creates a platform for the intricate interplay between rhythm and melody. How does this apply to Chinese and Japanese music? Discover the world of ‘Composition’ at this year’s Asian Music Summer School. Our Summer School brochure is now available.
