Summer School 2006 

CHINESE MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL FOR ADULTS
29 July–2 August

This year we will be holding a 5-day Chinese summer school for adults, offering expert tuition in Chinese instrumental music, including masterclasses on the qin, pipa, dizi and erhu. Participants choose the instrument in which they wish to specialize and the relevant artist becomes their teacher for the week. There will also be the opportunity to join ensemble classes.

The guqin is a seven-stringed zither. It is China’s oldest stringed instrument with a history of 3,000 years. Traditionally, the guqin has been viewed as a symbol of Chinese high culture and expresses the quintessential sound of Chinese music. This year, we are delighted to welcome back Gong Yi, an internationally renowned guqin master from Shanghai.

The erhu is a quintessential Chinese instrument. It has two strings and is played with the bow clasped between them. Hu Bin is a well-known erhu soloist based in the UK. She will offer classes at this year’s summer school on the erhu and the gaohu (high-pitched Cantonese fiddle).

The dizi is a unique type of Chinese transverse flute. It is a very popular instrument with a deep and rich history. Dizi are usually made from bamboo, however, they can also be made from other kinds of wood, or from stone and jade (yudi). Wang Ciheng is a wellrecognized dizi master in China and around the world.

pipa
The pipa is a 4-stringed lute with a pearshaped body. It arrived in China through the Silk Road in the 4th or 5th century and has played an important role in the aristocracy of the imperial dynasties, as well as featuring prominently in the earthy folk styles. Cheng Yu is an internationally renowned pipa virtuoso from Beijing, whose most recent project has been to re-create the 5-stringed pipa.

  This 3-day summer school offers children and young people creative opportunities to experience Chinese arts and culture. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to learn Chinese instruments – guqin, pipa, dizi and erhu – with their chosen teacher (for further details about teachers please see the Chinese summer school for adults). In addition, there will be sessions featuring Chinese music and cultural appreciation, Chinese dance and the Chinese New Year Festival.
