Summer School 2005 

 JAPANESE MUSIC SUMMER SCHOOL
 26th – 28th July

This year Asian Music Circuit was very pleased to hold its first Japanese music summer school, which took place from 26 to 28 July 2005. The summer school involved workshops in taiko drumming taught by Hiroshi Motofuji and shinobue workshops taught by Sayuri Ono as well as informative daily seminars and a virtuosic koto concert given by Etsuko Takezawa.

Taiko Japanese drums
Taiko drumming is a vibrant and highly skilled art form that is now popular world-wide. Hiroshi Motofuji joined a traditional taiko group aged 9, and at 16 joined Oedo Sukeroku Daiko, a leading professional taiko troupe based in Tokyo who later gave him the title ‘Master of Taiko’. From 1999 to 2001 he lectured Japanese music and taiko performance at Rikkyo University, Tokyo. Hiroshi Motofuji is currently active as a top solo taiko performer.

Shinobue bamboo flute
The shinobue is a transverse bamboo used in a wide range of Japanese traditional performing arts, including the colourful lively genre of Kabuki – a tradition that very popular in Japan. Sayuri Ono was into a family of traditional Noh theatre and started playing the shinobue at age Sayuri performs frequently on TV and and also works on unique collaborations with different genres of music.
