CHHAU DANCE

A fun-filled workshop featuring mask dance from

Eastern India

* In association wit the British Library

Download flyer/booking form here.

A rare and exciting opportunity to experience the Ramayana stories danced by the Royal Rarhi Chhau dancers in their first visit to the UK.

In this ancient dance form the young dancers wear colourful outsized masks and perform tremendous acrobatics, martial art movements and comedy scenes accompanied by exhilarating live drumming. Performances traditionally take place outdoors, during festivals and special occasions.

The dancers are based at the Royal Chhau Dance Academy, which was created in 1985 and they have been learning these ancient dances from the young age of 3 or 4 years old.

This workshop will introduce the Chhau dance style, with a lively demonstration of dance and drumming. There will be a short introduction to the main characters in the Ramayana epic story, the masks and costumes and the musical accompaniment. This will be followed by a dance and movement workshop where children can try out some of the movements of these different characters.
