François Balthazar Solvyns: Les Hindoûs

The Flemish artist François Balthazar Solvyns (1760 - 1824) lived in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803. His collection of etchings of the Hindus provide a rich and compelling portrait of India two hundred years ago.

A number of Solvyns' etchings of Bengali musicians are housed in the Asian Music Circuit's Museum of Asian Music. A selection can be seen on our flickr page.
