India's Ace Flautist, Ronu Majumdar needs no introduction to music lovers all over the globe. By virtue of his phenomenal talent, he and the Bansuri are literally synonymous. Ranendranath Majumdar, popularly known as Ronu Majumdar is a force to reckon with in the realm of Indian classical music both as a thinking musician and scintillating performer. Ronu Majumdar began playing the flute under the guidance of his father Dr. Bhanu Majumdar, late Pt. Lakshman Prasad Jaipurwale and finally the revered Pt. Vijay Raghav Rao. He was also fortunate to receive training from his grand guru Pt. Ravi Shankar. A powerhouse performer, Ronu Majumdar is firmly rooted in the Maihar gharana which has also given shape to sturdy musical oaks like Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Music is one of the deepest forms of expression of people's understanding of our world. In many parts of Asia, knowledge has been seen as more of revelation than science, contemplative and intuitive rather than intellectual, That knowledge, which could not easily be expressed in words, found in music an ideal medium through which it could be communicated. Music has the potential to create awareness, a better understanding of people's attitudes and perceptions, their hopes and aspirations. It is that world of intuitive knowledge that is common to mankind and has the potential to unite communities.

I know not how thou singest, my
master! I ever listen in silent amazement.

The light of thy music illumines the
world. The life breath of thy music
runs from sky to sky. The holy stream of thy music breaks through all stony obstacles and rushes on.

My heart longs to join in thy song,
but vainly struggles for a voice. I
would speak, but speech breaks not into song, and I cry out baffled. Ah, thou hast made my heart captive in the endless meshes of thy music, my master

Rabindranath Tagore

The Asian Music Circuit aims to bring the best of traditional and contemporary music reflecting living traditions from Asia to the widest public possible. The study and understanding of music from different parts of our world is a journey of discovery of the deeper reality of things, of oneself and of our world . Such a journey is undertaken as much by the listener as by the performer and it is their joint and mutual experience that can lead to a heightened state of mind. Only then does music, to quote one of India's greatest philosophers Dr. Radhakrishnan , “give us a sense of the meaningfulness of life and evoke in us ideas of the larger beauty , justice and charity of the universe”.
